Posture

Stiffness in the neck or back can often be caused by long-term underlying postural issues. Most people have felt the effects of poor posture throughout their lives and the level of discomfort can often be made worse by stress, Poor body mechanics, obesity, congenital deformities, pregnancy, physical activity and age.

At beyond better health, we pride ourselves on the fact that through regular chiropractic intervention, we aim to help you reduce discomfort caused by poor posture and also work with you long-term to help you improve your posture through exercise and other lifestyle changes.

Why is having good posture important?

Having a good posture, or alignment of the body, affects the way that the body functions. It can affect your range of motion, your appearance, and your overall quality of life.

If your spine is not aligned properly, it’s likely that overtime you will experience some pain, some of your muscles may become tight or too weak. These imbalances that may appear small on the surface can potentially lead to something more chronic long-term.

The effects of poor posture can originate in the spine or hips, but make it’s way around the body eventually affection the way you stand, sit walk and run.

What is defined as poor posture?

Posture problems are extremely common and most people have a bad posture to some degree. Here are some common signs that someone’s posture is not great:

  • The head juts forward when standing or walking, which may give the person a stiff neck.
  • There are more curves in the spine than necessary. For example, there may be an excessive arch in the lower back or neck.
  • One shoulder appears higher than the other, one hip appears lower than the other.

Poor posture is often caused by doing the same thing for long periods of time, leading to muscle imbalances. For example, if you do a lot of office work seated at a desk, you may find that your neck and lower back are consistently in pain because of the way you sit.

On the contrast, if you spend a lot of time lifting boxes, you may find that over time, your shoulders because stiff or your back becomes less resilient than they once were.

How can we Help?

At Beyond Better Health we are guided by the belief that structure dictates function. How your bones are placed determines how they can move, how your muscles are exercised determines your range of motion and this in turn affects your nervous system.

When you come to see us, we will ask about your health history, symptoms you may be experiencing and take a full postural evaluation to get an understanding of not only what hurts but why and what structures of the body are involved.

We will also analyse how you conduct your daily tasks, how your workstation is set up, etc. to recommend the best course of treatment. We will also help you modify your daily habits and activities to help you achieve long term success in maintaining good posture, as well as other health goals.

Treatment may include spinal adjustments, manual manipulations of the spine or other joints, mobilization techniques that use low force techniques that gently stretch tissues that may be tight or restricted in range, and soft tissue therapy to relax your muscles.

We may also offer other therapies such as hydrotherapy which could include heat or ice packs in conjunction with massage and gentle stretching.

Each case is different and the length of time depends on how severe your condition is. While you may start to feel relief from your symptoms during the first visit, we recommend a series of treatments over a period of weeks or months depending on what’s best for you.

Once we’ve taken the time to correct the postural issues that are causing pain, we’ll spend time teaching you how to maintain your posture.

Like any other skill, standing or sitting in the correct position takes effort and it may take some time until you are able to keep good alignment throughout the day without having to think about it.

Many other forms of treatment focus on suppressing symptoms with medication or surgery. In contrast, chiropractic care for posture, as well as the rest of chiropractic, focuses on identifying and removing the underlying causes that lead to those symptoms in order to improve your overall health.
