Headaches & Migraines

Headaches and migraines can be described as a genetic tendency
toward sensitivity of the nervous system.

This means that headache and migraine sufferers find it hard to inhibit pain information and therefore frequently suffer symptoms of a dysfunctional nervous system (for example pain, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound). People who have headaches and migraines usually have had them a long time and began suffering them in their teens or twenties.

Types of headaches.

Headache is the third most likely reason to present to a
chiropractor and migraine affects around 16% of the world’s population. It is a
common burden in society and accounts for huge economic costs.  There are over 100 different types of headaches, the most common are:

  • Tension type headache: mild to moderate intensity, pressing/tightening feeling, possible light or sound sensitivity.

  • Migraine: lasts up to 3 days, mostly one-sided head pain, pulsing/throbbing, nausea, vomiting, visual disturbance, light or sound

  • Cluster Headache: Severe eye and temporal region pain, lasts up to 3 hours, more frequent in males, runny nose, tears from eye, sweating.

  • Cervicogenic Headache: One sided headache directly caused from injury or dysfunction of the neck, neck position aggravates headache and there are tender points of the neck that aggravate headache. Actually quite rare (4% of headaches).

The most important thing regarding a headache is the history. The chiropractor will listen to your story and ask critical questions to rule out any unlikely red flag causes of headache (tumour, infection, bleed) and skilfully recognise which type of headache you have.

How can Chiropractic CARE Help me?

Chiropractors play a key role in managing headaches and migraines
and can reduce the frequency, intensity and other associated symptoms and problems. This means that patients can enjoy more headache and migraine free days, avoid medications, and eliminate angst, worry and overall disability.

We can help get you out of pain and decrease its rate of return. Treatment options include:

  • Spinal manipulation: A problematic neck can be a large contributor to headaches. The use of spinal manipulation is very effective at eliminating the neck as a trigger for headache or migraine.
  • Trigger point therapy: Reducing muscle knots in and around the neck helps to reduce referred pain from these structures.
  • Dry needling to improve awareness and proprioception of the spine.
  • Strengthening and postural advice needed to balance and stabilise the neck.
  • Improving the mechanics of the whole spine and functioning of the nervous system.
  • Mindfulness and breathing exercises.
