Knee Pain

Knee pain in the sportsperson or athlete can be debilitating but can be just as upsetting and disabling in the general population. Whether knee pain impacts your ability to jump, run, squat, or get out of the chair you don’t want to leave a problematic knee.

Chronic knee pain affects 25 percent of adults and has a significant impact on daily function and quality of life so early intervention to help knee pain is key.

The knee has the largest joint surfaces in the body and depending on the activity needs to support up to 5 times the weight of the body. This means that keeping the knee joint healthy should be a lifelong priority.

Pain from the knee can be arising from the patellofemoral joint (under the kneecap), meniscus, surrounding ligaments, tendons, muscles or joint surfaces.

This can be caused by patella abnormality, muscular imbalances and muscle weakness. Other causes to consider are pain referral from the hip joint which is quite common, lumbar spine joints, sacroiliac joint dysfunction or nerve compression or entrapment.

If you are suffering with knee pain, have tightness or stiffness of the knee, have had an injury to your knee or want to make your knees stronger it’s important to have your knee assessed and diagnosed so that a comprehensive management and treatment plan can be made for you.

Our chiropractor has a special interest in treating knee problems after dealing with injuries to his own knees. He has observed several knee surgeries and has relationships with top knee orthopaedists in Melbourne.

How can we help?

Treatment of the knee involves assessing the spine, hip, ankles, and feet as these areas can contribute to the knee problem. Adjustments to these joints to improve biomechanics and proprioception form part of our specialist intervention. A range of other modalities are used to improve joint motion and alleviate pain. Most likely exercises will be prescribed to provide strength to muscles surrounding the knee, hip and core which will provide a solid, more resilient knee.
