ankle sprain & foot pain

A sprained ankle is the most common musculoskeletal injury. Most of the time an ankle is sprained because it rolls inwards after landing on it wrongly or landing on something that causes the ankle and foot to invert. This movement stretches the ligaments on the outside of the ankle and the muscles and tendons on the outside of the leg and foot. If the movement is excessive, it can cause the ligament to rupture.

Of course, the ankle can also become sprained on the inside with a movement that causes the ankle and foot to evert, however this is less common. Often there is swelling or bruising on both sides of the ankle after a rolling injury suggesting both sides have been traumatised.

The good news is that even the most significant of sprains can be managed conservatively with chiropractic care. Our chiropractors have managed all types of ankle sprains from minor grade I through to complete ATFL (anterior talo-fibular ligament) rupture.

It is important to firstly diagnose the problem with orthopaedic tests to find out which ligament/s are involved and possibly refer for an MRI if deemed necessary.

Treatment focuses on early motion into the joint, reorganising and mobilising scar tissue, improving proprioception and gaining strength and control up the leg (knee and hip) and trunk.

If the ankle is not rehabilitated properly, it will remain unstable. Exercises are given to help you be fitter than you were before so that you don’t continually roll your ankle into the future (chronic instability) We can help get you out of pain and make sure it doesn’t return.
